English translation

I am consumed by Laylā,
cut off from all the world besides her.
And if they ask, “Who is this?”
say: the love-struck one, undone.
Love’s wine has seized him so completely
that nothing of him remains untouched.
A wine of intimacy, a wine of holiness
not the wine that leads astray.
Breezes of nearness swept toward me
from the dwelling-places of the Beloved;
they stirred my soul and my deepest secret
when they offered me their greeting.
And from it flowed through all creation
breezes perfumed with amber.
So tell my story on my behalf,
if you, O Saʿd, are worthy of bearing it.
For it is a noble secret,
never spoken before the unworthy.
It is a subtle meaning,
veiled from all of humankind
save from a devout servant,
a pure and liberated Sufi,
one who unites Law and Truth,
gathering branch and root as one.
Where are the masters of inner meanings?
Where are those endowed with divine knowings?
Where are the people of realities,
the souls that dwell in higher realms?
I answer only the one who calls to me
such is the law that governs this affair.
It is a private matter, not for all alike:
a state that comes after one has drunk deeply.
