A biḥubbi aḥbābī ulām

English translation
Am I to be blamed for loving those I love?
No, by the One who fashioned humankind.
My eyes, since parting from them,
Have never tasted the sweetness of restful sleep.
My heart was captivated by their love
Before my tongue had learned to speak.
I was nourished upon their noble traits
And the child is pained when he is weaned.
From loving them I cannot desist
And none but they do I desire.
By God, depart, O you distracted one
With fairness I have spoken too much.
O you who dwell in the valley’s bend
My back has bent from longing for you.
Will you not grant the seeker’s wish
just once, to the one imprisoned by passion?
O you standing upon al-Safa
Grant by the right of al-Mustafa
Through you my heart attained its purity.
To the longing one in the Abode of Peace.
